It’s September, and we’re back in the swing of things – there’s a ‘new year’ sort of energy in the air, and it’s a great time to get out there and build your network. But in this age of hybrid-everything, where tech and tradition overlap, what should you actually bring with you to meetings? I’m finding it’s all about the right balance between the old-school and the ultra-digital…
Business Cards – Still Not Dead
You might think business cards are ancient history, but trust me, they’re still around, and still useful. People still love a good business card. There’s just something tactile and immediate about handing over a card that no screen can really replace. When it’s designed well - clear, reflecting your brand and not overloaded with information - your card can still make a solid impression.
Business cards have evolved though. There are smart cards out there now; metal or plastic ones embedded with NFC chips, or dynamic QR codes that can link directly to your LinkedIn, website, or portfolio. One scan and boom, you’re in their phone.
QR Codes – Your Best Mate
QR codes have had a massive comeback, and they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. From menus at your local pub to checking into events, people are quite used to scanning them now. At networking events, a custom QR code is one of the easiest and slickest tools you can have.
You can stick it on your business card, phone case, or even have it as your phone’s lock screen. Link it to your LinkedIn profile, your email list sign-up, a personal landing page, or even an event that you’re promoting. You can even have it go to a linktree-style hub with your experience, socials, and portfolio. It’s quick, efficient, and shows you’re up to date.
Be careful, though – some sites allow you to create a code, but it might have a limited life span. Make sure yours is permanent before you send your designs off for printing.
LinkedIn – Your Digital Handshake
Nowadays if you’re going to an event without a polished LinkedIn profile, you’re doing yourself a disservice. LinkedIn is still the go-to for career networking, and most professionals will check your profile before or after meeting you in person.
Before the meeting, make sure your LinkedIn is in top shape: a clear (and recent!) photo, strong headline, and latest updates. If you’re attending or even spotlighting at an event, post about it beforehand to show you’re engaged. Tagging others in a post about the event you’ve all just been to is a great way to get more exposure as well.
Bonus Tip: Bring Yourself
Sounds cheesy, but it’s true. The best thing you can bring to any networking event is you and your authentic self – genuine, interested, and ready to chat. Tools are great, but the human connection is still what makes networking work.
So whether you’re flashing a fancy NFC card, sharing a QR code, or old-schooling it with paper business cards, remember the real networking magic happens with meaningful connections – not just collecting contacts. And I can’t wait to see what you’re all bringing to our meetings this autumn!
