Ten Easy Conversation Starters

If you’re visiting a brand new meeting, it can be difficult to know how to break the ice – especially if the room is already buzzing with the chatter of people who know each other. But fear not! I’ve got 10 easy conversation starters that’ll help you get the ball rolling: all casual, friendly, and sure to spark some great discussions – and maybe even some long-term friendships…

How did you get into your line of work?
It’s a classic, and I’ve never seen it fail yet. Asking about someone’s journey can lead to fascinating stories and connections. You might discover shared experiences, or even find out something you didn’t know about their industry.

What’s the best thing that’s happened to you this week?
This question sets a positive tone, and also invites the other person to share a bit of personal insight. Whether it’s a big win at work or a fun weekend adventure, it helps create a friendly and open atmosphere.

What’s your tried and tested tip for getting focused and organised at work?
In a professional setting, this question can lead to some insightful discussions. People love sharing tips and tricks, and you might get some great ideas for your own routine.

What’s been your favourite project recently?
This opener is not only relevant but also gives the other person a chance to shine. It shows you’re interested in their work, and gives you some idea of their clients and what they can do for them – useful for you, or to refer to others.

What trends are you seeing in your industry?
This is a great way to transition into a more professional discussion. It shows that you’re interested in what’s happening in their field and can lead to an exchange of valuable insights and knowledge.

How are you enjoying the event so far?
This one’s a classic, but it’s effective! It helps ease into a conversation about the event itself and what people think of it. You can bond over shared experiences, like the other attendees, the venue, or even the catering!

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Everyone has hobbies, and this question is a fantastic way to learn more about the person. Whether they’re into hiking, painting, or cooking, discussing passions can open the door to common interests.

Have you read any good books or seen any good movies lately?
This is a great way to get into a deeper conversation about interests outside of work. Plus, if they recommend something awesome, you might just add it to your must-read or must-watch list!

If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be?
This is a fun and thought-provoking question that can lead to some really engaging conversations. Plus, it’s a great way to learn about someone’s influences and interests.

Have you visited anywhere interesting lately?
This is great, because it could be about other networking meetings, local places of interest, or somewhere abroad. People love sharing their travel stories, whether they’ve been on their hols or travelled for work. This question can lead to discussions about favourite destinations, cultural experiences, or even travel tips!

Tips for Success:

While these conversation starters are designed to make networking easier, remember that the key to any good conversation is active listening. Pay attention to what the other person is saying, and respond genuinely. Follow-up questions can keep the dialogue flowing and show that you’re interested.

Also, don’t be afraid to share a bit about yourself when the opportunity arises. Networking is all about building relationships, so let your personality shine through!

Finding something to say at a networking meeting doesn’t have to feel like a chore; it can be such an enjoyable way to meet new people and build long-lasting connections. I’ve met some friends for life – both professional and personal – and it all starts with that first conversation.
