The summer months usually a see a dip in networking opportunities, and that’s why September always feels like a “back to business” month – time to get back on the job and back in the networking room. But you don’t need to throw yourself into dozens of meetings - in fact, it’s far better to give it all some thought and analysis before you plunge back in, to make sure the events you go to will give you the most opportunities.
Here’s how to plan your networking to make sure it’s in line with what you want to achieve in Q4, so you can make the most of those networking opportunities to help make it happen.
Revisit your goals
Start by looking at your plan for Q4 and what you want to achieve as a business, and then think about what you want from your networking this autumn to make that a reality. Are you looking for new clients, a new collaboration, or just some greater visibility? Being clear about what your networking goals are make it much easier to choose the right events and conversations.
It can also help to look back at what worked earlier in the year too - which meetings felt most valuable? Which connections led to real opportunities? Use that insight to guide your next few months, so your networking feels like it has a real purpose.
Refresh your connections
September is a great time to reconnect with people you have not seen since before the summer. A friendly LinkedIn message, a quick Zoom with a coffee, or planning to attend the same networking event can quickly rebuild momentum in those relationships. Others are highly likely to be doing the same and will welcome the chance for a catch-up!
Plan your Q4 commitments now
The final quarter of the year can fill up fast, especially in those last weeks of November and December, so it is wise to think ahead. Mark the key networking events that you’d like to attend in your diary now, including in-person networking meetings, any hybrid sessions and online catch-ups, and get them booked so that you have that commitment in place and in the diary.
Try something new
If you have not visited a new meeting before, September is an excellent time to give it a go. A fresh group can bring new energy, new contacts and a different style of conversation. You may discover a meeting that feels like a better fit for your goals right now.
To get the most from a new meeting, arrive with a simple introduction to what you do, have a few conversation starters in mind, and a clear idea of what you want to learn. Ask questions, listen carefully, be open, and follow up afterwards. Even one new connection can lead to something useful for the months ahead.
There is always a “new year” feel to September, but it doesn’t have to mean piling a load of pressure on yourself. Confirm your goals for the coming months and align your networking with those goals, and everything will feel planned, manageable and much more likely to bear fruit!
